A Room with a View
2017-2018 KDC Finalist
To start, Piron centered the design around two equally stunning focal points: the expansive kitchen window and the custom ventilation hood. The window offered stunning views of the sloping hill and allowed extra sunlight into the space. The antique, pewter-and-brass hood is an impressive statement piece—an element Piron ensured would be viewable from the adjacent breakfast room by relocating the island light fixtures to complement the kitchen window. Piron wanted to preserve a timeless and traditional aesthetic to match the overall style of the home but with a fresh feel. The clients had expressed interest in an all-white kitchen—a timeless look, to be sure—so Piron worked in white cabinet interiors, tiles around the sink and range, and Calcutta marble countertops.
The hand-painted, sage-colored cabinetry imparts a handcrafted feel and pulls out the marble’s watercolor-like strokes. Piron opted for a creative use of nickel and brass hardware, using toggles in place of standard knobs. Cabinet crown molding provides a classical element and the unique architectural ceiling detail completes the comprehensive design.
Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer columns blend seamlessly into the furniture-inspired joinery, while the Wolf dual-fuel range, complete with brass bevels, complements the striking hood. The owners knew they needed an additional oven solution—for larger gatherings and parties—thus, they selected a Wolf convection steam oven for its ease of use and versatility.
