Just a Pop of Red
2nd Place Contemporary Award KDC 2013-14
Walnut has always been a “true love” for designer Sandra Agurto, for its warm, elegant look. So when she and the design team at Phil Kean Design Group sought a unifying element in the renovation of a mid-century modern inspired Winter Park home, walnut instantly came to mind.
The home’s long, narrow kitchen sits immediately adjacent to the living room. Lining up the main portion of the kitchen with the living space helped keep it defined and open. Wrapping the oven/refrigerator wall and the fireplace wall in walnut plank detail helped make the kitchen and living room read as one. At the same time, the touches of walnut add warmth and a touch of nature to the concrete floors, white walls and white cabinets.
The client asked for a modern, high-end kitchen that functions for both family meals and entertaining, and needed seating for four at table height in the kitchen. A walnut-planked table provides the seating, while a similar island adds workspace and additional seating.
The Wolf induction cooktop is sleek and works perfectly with the design. Using Sub-Zero allowed the refrigerator to be positioned separately from the freezer, perfect for the client who uses the refrigerator when she is cooking and rarely needs to access the freezer, as she cooks with mostly fresh food. The freezer could be placed adjacent to a pantry door which could be hidden under the same cabinetry.
As a final touch, a bright pop of red was added with the kitchen lighting fixture, recalling the red front door of the house. It adds playfulness and humor to this stunning, zen-like modern design.
