Levin Kitchen

Regional Award Winner KDC 2010-12

"Designed to anchor this desert house into its site as it sits in the center of the floor plan, the kitchen overlooks a bridge to detect arriving guests. Across its work area, activities in the living areas and outdoor spaces are visible. The neutral palette of the kitchen replies to its desert setting, echoing the desert’s subdued hues with its artful blooms of vibrant color.

The primary challenge presented in the client’s parameters was the request for a fully functional, socially engaged kitchen where the social life remains unaware of the preparation of food. With that in mind, the white oak cabinetry forms a buffer between the cooking and living spaces. Along the white Caesarstone work surface, an array of pop-up doors conceals small appliances, powered and ready to serve.

Consistent with the concept, a coffee-making station is concealed behind pocketing doors. This is also ready to use and easy to disappear into the back-to-back storage and services “island” containing the refrigerator, wall ovens, and warming drawers. The kitchen’s role was central in the design of this home, every decision finely tuned for the joys of preparing and sharing food with family and friends."
