      Q&A with Shawna Dillon

How do you approach the design process?
I start every project trying to get to know my client personally, to get a feel for how they live in their home, and how they WANT to live in their home. The most important question I can ask is what works in their current space, and what does not. This question gives me tremendous insight into how they want their future space to function, and what they are currently lacking.

How does your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers/architects?
I’d like to think my strength is in designing contemporary spaces that are both warm and livable. I find that most people gravitate toward a more streamlined design for the kitchen, but there is a misconception that contemporary design has to be cold and austere. I play with texture, form, style, and finish to provide interesting marriages between design elements. It brings personality to the design without being fussy.

What is the great value you provide your client?
Service!! You are only as strong as the service you provide. You can offer a great product, but if the service isn’t there to back it up, it’s a disaster. Customer service goes a long way in this business.

What does the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest mean to you?
The Design Contest is an excellent opportunity to see projects that showcase the best of the best. Initially it provides a fun avenue to glance into what your peers are doing, but it also becomes an amazing resource to view products most people only dream about in real life installations. The imagery and ideas that come out of this contest are a great way to show a client what’s possible and gain inspiration for a project.

What are some of the current design trends?
Designing kitchens as the main “living room”, accommodating healthier eating/food preparation styles, very low maintenance finishes/materials, lots of texture, industrial materials, bronze accents, unique cabinet finishes like porcelain and glass.

Where do you see kitchen design going in the next 5 years?
I definitely see kitchen design getting more luxurious. As we continue to view this room as the heart of the home, it becomes more and more important in our lives. I think layouts will need to become more efficient as technology increases and time decreases. Home automation will become more mainstream and will be vital in offering flexibility for aging in place.
