In the Low Country Modern kitchen, everything feels as if it is in precisely the right place—and that is the way Laura Lee Samford designed it to be. Hitting the right mix of casual yet sophisticated, the kitchen is not just for show, but for the daily use of its owners and their frequent entertaining.
Samford’s design seamlessly integrates the appliances, cabinetry, and interior architecture through a consistent finish: quarter-sawn, wire-brushed, and white-washed white oak that resembles driftwood. The island and window mullions are in a darker hue and provide the right amount of contrast for a richer feel. In totality, the monochrome palette imparts a slightly rustic yet refined aesthetic.
Boldly positioned in the middle the kitchen, the island serves two purposes. It houses many of the appliances necessary for the client’s ideal, functional kitchen—including a Wolf warming drawer and Sub-Zero refrigeration drawers—while its sheer size creates the kitchen’s focal point. The jewel-like, handblown light fixtures over the island emphasize the island’s importance further. For added convenience and utility, a butler’s pantry sits just off the kitchen. In addition to laundry appliances and coat and broom closets, it houses two Sub-Zero wine storage columns and Wolf M series double ovens and warming drawer.
Samford and the clients selected Sub-Zero and Wolf appliance chiefly for their reliability and sophistication. The 24-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer flanking the Wolf rangetop provide ample storage space, despite their narrow dimension. Using a unique approach, Samford designed the Wolf rangetop to sit flush with the stainless-steel countertops for a cleaner, more architecturally refined look.
Nestled in the low country just outside of Savannah, Georgia, peering over the Ogeechee River and Lake Clara, this classical farmhouse needed a kitchen that would match the grandeur of the landscape—and Samford did just that.
