Q&A with Christopher Olexy

Where do you find design inspiration?

I am a classicist at heart. I look to architects like the late John F. Staub who designed beautifully proportioned homes. His spaces never feel too large or too small. I follow the work of Gil Shaffer, Steven Gambrel, and many others who all have a strong sense of place in their work. I also try to hunt down architectural magazines and books from the 20’s and 30’s. They are great resources for well thought out details.

How do you approach the design process?

I have an appreciation for almost ever design aesthetic there is so I feel II listen, listen, and then listen to the client. It doesn’t matter how much I want to do something for a space if in the end it is not what the client wants. It’s all about getting to know the people who inhabit a home or office. The design has to be an extension of the client’s personality. You have to get to really know your client.

What makes your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers?

I think it’s my attention to the small details that people overlook. I believe a lot of people accept the "look" of something that inevitably leaves you with a feeling of falling short.

What is the greatest value you provide to your clients?

Honesty, guidance, and support of their opinions and decisions. I don’t always agree with my client’s choices at first. But I always respect their opinions.
