Q&A with Mikal Otten
Where do you find design inspiration?
Mostly through traveling and visiting other countries. Architecture, hotels, nature are all inspiring. I also love attending the European kitchen and furniture shows. How do you approach the design process?
I start each project fresh. I listen, try to understand the vibe of my customer, interpret and then instill my individual touch.
How does your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers/architects?
I love to use natural organic materials. It’s the layers of textures and finishes that give my kitchens life and personality. Similar to nature, a stream bed may have smooth stones honed by the flow of water next to a jagged boulder, yet the atmosphere is Zen and tranquility.
What is your biggest challenge as a designer/architect?
Time is always the challenge.
What does the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest mean to you?
Sub-Zero and Wolf’s design competition definitely sets the bar. It’s an absolute honor to be recognized as one of the Regional winners for the 3rd time. I’m inspired to take it to the next level.
What are some of the current design trends?
I’m seeing mostly transitional to contemporary styling. Still mostly greys juxtaposed against warm woods. No ornamentation. Classic and smart. Interiors of cabinetry are being more personalized and often are as important as the exteriors.
